_ From Mallory Square, in Key West, Florida on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights Dyah Davis 21-2-1-9 KO’s Son of 1976 Olympic gold medalist Howard Davis took on Alfonso Lopez 20-2-17 KO’s in a 10 round Super Middleweight bout. Davis came into the fight on a 2 fight win streak after a loss to Aaron Pryor Jr. and a draw against Francisco Sierra and Lopez rebounded from a loss to Kelly Pavlik this past May with a TKO win against Michael Walker in September.  In the first three rounds both Davis and Lopez were extremely cautious in their attacks which did not make for a very fan friendly T.V match up. Both fighters were very tactical in their approach, but Davis had a slim advantage in speed and power. In the middle rounds Davis continued to use his distance and speed advantage to edge Lopez in an uneventful and quite honestly an action less fight. Finally in Round 7 some excitement, as Davis landed a beautiful uppercut to the jaw of Lopez and followed up with a nice left hook later in the round. A little bit of success for Lopez in round 8, as he landed a flush right hand perfectly on Davis, but too little too late at that point. In the final two rounds, Lopez and Davis mirrored the first 8 rounds with a continued lack of offensive production and quite frankly left myself and I can imagine the viewing audience in a state of boredom. Davis took home the unanimous decision 100-90 (twice) ,99-91.
_ ----------------
In the opening bout , on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, Light Middleweight Steve Martinez 11-1-9 KO’s took on Denis Douglin 14-1-8 KO’s in an 8 round co main event. Douglin, who is trained by his mother Saphya, seemed to be out boxed by the undefeated Martinez through the first four rounds, although the rounds could have gone either way . Douglin tried to impose his will and pressure Martinez, but Martinez’s slightly quicker hands were the key. In round 5 both fighters were able to land clean hooks and make their mark in the round. In the sixth and seventh rounds Martinez continued to edge Douglin slightly in landed punches, but the game Douglin would land an occasional looping hook. In an entertaining moment Saphya, Douglin’s Mother/ Trainer implored her son to step it up in the last round by saying “Really? Really? That’s how you’re going to fight?” as she knew her son needed to win the last round in order to pull off the victory. Both fighters put a good effort in the last round, But Douglin seem to out work Martinez giving him the split decision win with the judges scores of 77-75 , 75-77,77-75.
